Chainlink’s LINK Pops 15%, XRP Loses Steam as Bitcoin Revisits $29.6K Range Lows

Tech stocks such as Tesla and Netflix, which crypto prices tend to correlate with, sold off during the day as investors shied away from risk assets.

Cryptocurrencies slid lower Thursday with bitcoin (BTC) revisiting the bottom threshold of its month-long trading range, while Chainlink’s LINK rallied solo among the largest crypto assets.

BTC’s price dipped to as low as $29,593 during the afternoon hours, near its lowest point in a month. The largest cryptocurrency by market value has been see-sawing in a tight channel since June 21, bouncing from the $29,500 level multiple times to trade as high as $31,809.

Ether (ETH) buckled below $1,900 to change hands 1% lower than 24 hours ago.

Ripple’s XRP pared some of its impressive gains from previous days, dropping some 6% in the last 24 hours. The token’s price almost doubled to 93 cents a week ago, following a partial court victory against the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). After the decline, it was still trading at around 79 cents.

LINK, the native token of the Chainlink ecosystem, defied the market slump and was the only crypto asset with sizable gains among the 40 largest tokens by market capitalization.

The token surged 15% through the day above $8 for the first time in nearly three months as some large investors – whales in crypto jargon – acquired $6 million of tokens. The price action came after Chainlink released this week an interoperability protocol that facilitates communication between blockchains and banks, tested by interbank communication system Swift.

The CoinDesk Market Index, which tracks the performance of a basket of digital assets, gained early in the day then retreated and was down 1.26% over the last 24 hours.

Crypto investors might have been concerned by a sell-off in tech stocks. The NASDAQ 100 index (NDQ) declined 2% during the day, as investors dumped shares of tech giants Tesla (TSLA) and Netflix (NFLX) after their underwhelming quarterly earnings reports, dropping some 9%.

Cryptocurrency prices have a history of correlating with risk assets such as the tech-heavy NDQ, although the relationship has wobbled this year.

“Seems like we are just having a risk-off day in general after a massive run for weeks, with investors taking profits and rebalancing,” Brett Sifling, director at investment firm Gerber Kawasaki Wealth & Investment Management, told CoinDesk in a call.

Bitcoin Dawdles Below $30K as Investors Eye Coming Fed Rate Decision, BTC Options Expiry

Next week’s U.S. central bank interest rate decision and the bitcoin options expiry are unlikely to move markets, which have been stuck for weeks.

In another day of crypto market drudgery, bitcoin (BTC) briefly feinted higher Friday before settling back into its increasingly familiar environs below $30,000. The largest digital asset by market capitalization was recently trading at $29,904, up 0.3%.

Ether (ETH), the second largest cryptocurrency, remained largely unfazed during the day, lingering at around its weekly low below $1,900. Major alternative cryptocurrencies – so-called altcoins – including SOL and XRP recovered some of their losses endured earlier in the day.

MKR, governance token of decentralized finance lender MakerDAO, defied the broader market and enjoyed double-digit gains, buoyed by the activation of a token buyback program.

But micro-cap token CNC cratered as much as 75% during the day following a 1,700 ETH – some $3.2 million – exploit of Conic Finance, a Curve-adjacent decentralized finance protocol.

The CoinDesk Market Index, which tracks the performance of a basket of digital assets, inched up 0.3% in the last 24 hours, underscoring a somewhat tepid trading day. Investors will be eyeing a likely Federal Reserve interest rate increase and bitcoin options expiry next week.

In an email, Rachel Lin, CEO and co-founder of decentralized derivatives exchange SynFutures noted that the week started with enthusiasm over a favorable ruling in the Ripple-SEC case as investors expressed hopes for an altcoin season. But BTC and ETH failed to break resistance and returned to their weekly range lows, weighing on the market.

“[Bitcoin] options data reveal high open interest in $31,000 and $32,000 Call Options, denoting strong resistance at these levels,” Lin said. “The past day has been more favorable, with call options trading nearly 3x the volume of put options.”

“Fundamentally, the outlook remains bullish as money continues to flow into the crypto ecosystem,” she added. “This could represent a brief reversal, potentially leading to a move up to $34,000 if BTC achieves a sustained breakout above $31,500.”

Priced-In Spot BTC ETF

In an interview with CoinDesk TV’s “First Mover” program, Will Peck, head of digital assets for asset manager WisdomTree, said that it was “tough” to pinpoint a near-term bitcoin price target. But he also suggested that the impact of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approving a spot bitcoin ETF from any of the financial services giants that filed applications last month, including WisdomTree, was uncertain.

“An underlying question is how much institutional money there might be out there,” Peck said.

Lawrence Lewitinn, head of content at The Tie and CoinDesk TV contributor, said that neither the U.S. central bank’s likely 25 basis point rate (bps) on Wednesday nor the end-of-month options expiry would likely stir bitcoin from its current lull.

“We’ll see for the most part prices stay flat, at least for the upcoming,” Lewitinn said. “Unless there’s some exogenous variable, some sort of crazy news story – who knows what [SEC Chair Gary] Gensler could do. But all things being equal, we’re probably going to end up at about $30,000, a slow week.”

Metsola reinforces support for Ukraine as GLOBSEC 2023 gets underway

“Last year we were talking about five days for Putin to take over Kyiv. We’re now over 400 days after that” said the head of the European Parliament at the 18th edition of the conference in Bratislava which will be focused on global security.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said Europe must maintain its protective measures for Ukraine, speaking on the first day of the GLOBSEC’s 2023 Bratislava Forum.

Metsola’s comments came as the Ukrainian capital Kyiv was bombarded for another day by Russian missiles.

The 18th edition focuses on security like never before, fueled by Russia’s war in Ukraine.

At the forum, president Metsola had strong words for the participants.

“Last year we were talking about five days for Putin to take over Kyiv. We’re now over 400 days after that. Kyiv is bombed more than it has been in these past two days. The bombs are increasing.”

“We have a responsibility to make sure that those populists who want us to talk about something else don’t manage. And that’s up to us to do it”.

The event is also expected to highlight the Central Eastern European region’s influence on global stability.

But the conference will also shed light on the knock-on effects Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is having on our world.

Soaring inflation, the rising cost of living, unprecedented energy disruptions, and economic and food crises are just some of the developing factors.

Bitcoin, Ether Turn Upward in a Busy Week of Ethereum and Inflation News

Ether has risen more than 9% since the Ethereum Shanghai upgrade, which held center stage in crypto markets for much of the week. Bitcoin held fast above $30,000.

Major digital assets surged in an eventful week that included encouraging inflation veri and the much anticipated Ethereum Shanghai upgrade. Once-shaken confidence in crypto markets rose, along with valuations and trading volumes.

Bitcoin (BTC) and ether (ETH) have risen about 9% and 11%, respectively, over the past seven days, with much of the gains occurring over the latter few days.

In recent economic reports inflation was lower than expected and jobless claims were higher than expected. The Fed may have been hoping for such signs as reason to justify not raising interest rates again when the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) next meets in May.

Bond markets have begun to respond. The spread between two- and 10-year Treasury bonds, while still negative, has narrowed since early March.

Crypto markets’ biggest news was the completion of the Shanghai update, allowing ETH stakers to withdraw their ETH deposits. Ether has responded positively, increasing about 9% in price since the upgrade was completed.

One of investors’ prevailing fears was that the potential unlocking of 18.2 million ETH would lead to selling pressure on the asset. However, markets have so far viewed the de- risking of ETH staking positively.

ETH’s price upswing has led to the asset chipping away at bitcoin dominance by market capitalization. Crypto market trading volume also rose, as ETH’s daily volume spiked to more than twice its 20-day moving average on Thursday. BTC volume breached its 20-day moving average each day this week, with the exception of Thursday

Both BTC and ETH breached the upper range of their Bollinger Bands this week, an indication of increased bullishness. The Bollinger Bands indicator is a technical tool that plots an asset’s moving average and two standard deviations above and below. A breach of Bollinger Bands in either direction is considered to be a significant event, in this case a bullish one.

Some altcoins had a push higher this week as well. ARB, the native token for Ethereum layer 2 system Arbitrum, led the way – up 28% over the past seven days. Solana (SOL) and Immutable X’s IMX also had strong weeks, rising 20% and 17%, respectively.
